The fourth edition of the Rota do Pitéu, an initiative of the Setúbal City Council to promote the catering sector, runs through more than two dozen petiscos houses, between the 7th and 23rd of July.
Typical or innovative snacks, made with traditional products from the region, such as cuttlefish, fish, honey, olive oil, preserves, muscatel and Azeitão cheese, are on offer in 23 taverns, taverns, petisqueiras and seafood restaurants in the county de Setúbal, which offer a unique snack during the 16 days of the event at a fixed price of 3,5 euros.
The list on offer on this gastronomic route, consisting essentially of delicacies of regional influence, but also recreations of traditional Portuguese snacks, includes bifana with muscat sauce, croquettes, cuttlefish patties, mackerel in Thai sauce and clams à bulhão pato.
On Avenida Luísa Todi, there are the cuttlefish croquettes from 490 Taberna STB, the “marinière” mussel casserole from Chez Nando, Azeitão cheese in the oven with honey and almonds from Petisqueira do Manel and the “Pitéu da Tasca”, composed for cuttlefish pâté, fried cuttlefish and cuttlefish pie, cuttlefish sauce and toast, from Tasca do Choco.
Quail nest from Bardo Taberna Medieval, crepe with cheese, ham or egg, accompanied by salad from C'est Tout Balaise and traditional gizzards from Café Restaurante Arco Íris are available in Bairro do Troino.
Still in this area of the city, you can try homemade codfish cakes at Taberna do Fernando do Jornais, tenderloin on bread with Azeitão cheese at Tasca do Galo and all-you-can-eat sandwiches at Tostas & Cenas.
A few hundred meters from Troino, facing the gardens of the Convent of Jesus, Arroba Check.In offers a bruschetta from Azeitão made with ham and cheese from Azeitão.
Downtown, there are also many delicacies to try, starting with the bifana with muscatel sauce at the Moscatel de Setúbal Experience, in Praça de Bocage, and the mackerel in Thai sauce at Daniela Gourmet, on Rua Antão Girão, while in Largo da Ribeira Velha, Taberna do Largo invites you to taste the “half well made”, a delicacy composed of grain, cod and egg.
Close to Baixa, Tostaria do Bairro, in Bairro Salgado, proposes a fusion between land and sea, with mushrooms stuffed with sardines.
On the riverfront, Ora H, next to Docapesca, serves cuttlefish roe salad and Terraço do Mercado, on the first floor of Mercado do Livramento, offers carved steaks.
Further away from the centre, Porta 165, in Bairro do Viso, has couscous with shrimp, orange and muscat, and Tas'ka Moka, in Vale do Cobro, invites you to taste rotos rotos à setubalense, while Florida Cervejaria serves woodpecker of fried cuttlefish.
The parish of Azeitão joins this itinerary of flavors with the snails at Café Rossio, in Vila Nogueira, and at Casa Janica, in Brejos de Azeitão, where Petisqueira Brandão suggests clams à bulhão Pato.
