The vice-president of the City Council, Carla Guerreiro, highlighted on the 19th, during the celebrations of the 164th anniversary of Setúbal's status as a city, the ability that the municipality demonstrates in attracting investment.
“When Setúbal was elevated to city status in 1860, it began to enjoy very important and recognized economic and social development and, after these 164 years, it continues to have the capacity to attract investment and have social development in line with economic development. ”, highlighted Carla Guerreiro.
The vice-president of the City Council spoke in the arcades of the Town Hall during the formal ceremonies celebrating the 164th anniversary of Setúbal's status as a city, which included the raising of the municipality's flag on the balcony of the Salão Nobre.
The mayor highlighted the symbolism of the date of April 19th to remember “the work carried out every day, in order to increase the population's quality of life and attract more people to the city”.
The elevation to city status took place in 1860, by royal charter, following a request from the Chamber, two years earlier, to King D. Pedro V.
At that time, the Barreiro/Setúbal railway was inaugurated and, in 1863, gas lighting. Embankment work on the river began, giving rise to Avenida Luísa Todi.
The 164th anniversary of Setúbal's status as a city led to the presentation of a greeting by the Presidency of the City Council at the public meeting on April 17th.
The text states that, 164 years after becoming a city, Setúbal “continues to grow and reinforce its importance”, with the aim of “always being one of the most important European cities”.
The greeting also highlights that Setúbal is “one of the most developed municipalities in the country”, due to what it produces, the wealth it generates, the economic activities “that are born, grow and multiply” and also the “rich cultural activity and heritage history” that it houses.
“We are important, above all, because of all those who make this great city their city, whether or not they were born on the banks of the Sado. The people of Setubal and Azeiton are our greatest asset. They are the ones who build the city every day. They are the ones who, wherever they are, remember what Setúbal is”, concludes the greeting.
