Setúbal is one of the 18 Portuguese municipalities that already meet at least three of the four requirements for carbon neutrality, according to data released on November 7 within the scope of COP27. – United Nations Conference on Climate Change, taking place in Egypt.
The Municipal Climate Action Map shows the response of the 308 national municipalities to climate change and was released by the company Get2C, in the areas of climate change, energy, carbon markets, climate finance and sustainable development, the day after the opening of COP27, which runs until 18 November in Sharm El Sheikh.
The four requirements for carbon neutrality are to have a climate change adaptation strategy and/or plan, an energy strategy, a carbon neutrality commitment and a carbon neutrality strategy and/or roadmap.
Setúbal is highlighted on the map as one of the 18 municipalities that meet at least three of the four requirements, which is the result of the work that the City Council has developed, such as the participation in the BEACON – Bridging European & Local Climate Action and PLAAC-Arrábida projects, that provided the municipality of Setúbal with essential tools for the construction of its Local Climate Action Plan.
Following the extensive work carried out, the municipality was selected by the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy for its “Policy Support Facility” program, through which two experts from this entity will provide technical support to Setúbal in the implementation of an adaptation project. to climate change.
This work has involved the population of Setubal, having been held several sessions within the scope of PLAAC-Arrábida and, recently, the workshop for climate change of the European Climate Pact, which took place on the 1st and 2nd of October at Casa do Largo.
Participants identified drought, the urgency of decarbonisation, food and mobility as the main issues related to climate change.
The session was attended by the vice-president of the Municipal Council, Carla Guerreiro, who is responsible for the Environment, who listened to the participants' proposals regarding possible forms of intervention at the local level and made known the work carried out by the municipality in this area. .
