Praia de Galapos, in the Arrábida Natural Park, has renewed conditions for accessing the sand, the result of improvements that facilitate pedestrian movements and safeguard access to emergency vehicles.
The requalification carried out in that bathing area in Setúbal, a joint operation of the APA – Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente and the Municipality of Setúbal, was carried out with the dual objective of ensuring better pedestrian accessibility and also to reinforce safety conditions.
The rehabilitated main access to the sandy beach of Praia de Galapos now has a staircase with wooden handrails for pedestrian use and a new roadway, which, in terms of car traffic, can only be used by emergency vehicles and concessionaires.
The work, an investment of around 160 thousand euros carried out in the first months of this year, also made it possible to ensure the consolidation of the cliff along all that renewed pedestrian and road route, an action ensured by the construction of a retaining wall of earth.
The intervention carried out at Praia de Galapos also included the demolition of an illegal construction that functioned as a restaurant in a high-risk area, subject to sea overtopping, and the municipality later asked the APA to rehabilitate the main access to the beach.
This operation, which adds tourist value to one of the most acclaimed beaches on the Setubal coastline, allows the Municipality of Setúbal to move forward, in the future, with more actions to improve the conditions of enjoyment of the beach, namely in terms of sanitation infrastructure.
