The museum spaces in Setúbal are celebrating with special programs free to the public on May 14th and 18th, to celebrate the European Night of Museums and International Museum Day.
On the European Night of Museums, marked on May 14, the museum spaces of the city council are open after hours, between 21:00 and 23:00, to provide a set of free cultural activities in a program organized by the Municipality of Setúbal .
From the Museum of Setúbal/Convento de Jesus, at 21:00, the visit “Zigzagging through the municipal museums” begins, to take the public to discover the vast museological heritage of the city, in a route that ends at the Museu do Trabalho Giacometti Museum.
Later, at 22:00 pm, at the Museum of Setúbal/Convento de Jesus, the initiative “After the Vespers – Staged visit to the convent spaces and the daily life of the nuns”, which shows the interior of that jewel of Manueline architecture, including cloisters and archaeological remains in the cloistered area.
This staged visit is free of charge, but requires prior registration, which must be done by contacting 969 754 106 or conventojesus@mun-setubal.pt.
The European Night of Museums is also a pretext to visit two exhibitions at the Museum of Setúbal/Convento de Jesus, one of long duration, with about five dozen pieces from the collections of the Museum of Setúbal, the other temporary, entitled “How many minorities make the whole ?”, by photographer Maurício Abreu and open until July 17.
Tonight, Casa das Imagens Lauro António – Library, Media Library and Archive hosts, at 21:00 pm, the “Monstra Session”, with a selection of award-winning short films at this year’s Monstra – Lisbon Animation Festival.

At Casa das Imagens it is also possible to enjoy the temporary exhibition “Cinema and censorship in Portugal”, with documents, photographs and various objects, to portray the censorship in cinema carried out in Portugal during the Estado Novo, which is open until September 10th.
The European Museum Night, an initiative created in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, is also an opportunity for the public to visit, free of charge and after hours, a range of temporary and long-term exhibitions in other museum spaces in the city.
At the Michel Giacometti Labor Museum, the shows Mundo Rural – “Ao Encontro do Povo” – Ethnographic Collection by Michel Giacometti, Indústria Conserveira – “From Lota à Lata” and Mercearia Liberdade – “A Heritage to Safeguard” are available. temporary “Latoaria”, open until July 2nd.
In the Municipal Gallery of the former Bank of Portugal, it is possible to visit the exhibitions “Treasures of the Museum of Setúbal/Convento de Jesus”, with archaeological pieces and works of sacred and contemporary art, including the Altarpiece of the Main Chapel of the Church of the Convent of Jesus , and “Antimonumentos”, with sculptures by Virgílio Domingues.

A highlight on this International Museum Day is the presentation, at 11:30 am, at the Michel Giacometti Work Museum, of an application for mobile devices dedicated to this museum space, with several cutting-edge technological resources, including augmented reality and sign language.
