The Casa do Corpo Santo was built in 1714 next to a section of the XNUMXth-century wall of Setúbal, which forms the east wall of the building.
The name comes from the name of the patron saint of the Confraria dos Navegantes of the city, which was installed there for centuries. The patron was San Pedro Gonçalves (or González) Telmo, protector of the castaways, Dominican friar, born in Castile in the twelfth century and beatified in the thirteenth century, known as Corpo Santo.
The house has several sets of baroque tiles by the master PMP, and the ceilings with XNUMXth century paintings and the gilded carvings of the chapel, in national style, should also be highlighted.
It currently houses the Baroque Museum, one of the centers of the Museum of Setúbal/Convento de Jesus, as well as a long-term exhibition of Nautical science instruments donated by Ireneu Cruz.
The Casa do Corpo Santo/Museu do Barroco, located on Rua do Corpo Santo, close to the Cathedral of Setúbal, in the historic center, has entrance fees for 1,61 euros, with free access for children under 12 years old, over 65 years old and school groups, by appointment on 265 236 066.
The building partially reopens to the public from February 6th, after maintenance work. The museum space of the Setúbal City Council now has the first floor accessible, on which the Barroque Museum operates, one of the centers of the Setúbal Museum/Convento de Jesus, where the ceilings with XNUMXth century paintings and the gilded carving of the chapel, in national style.
