“Women in Science”, organized by Ciência Viva, allows you to learn about Portuguese women scientists, what they work for, how they were motivated and how they can inspire young people in their professional choices.
The exhibition, opened in a session with the presence of 9th year students from Escola Secundária du Bocage, accompanied by teacher Ana Luzia Batista, presents the faces, in black and white, of two dozen Portuguese scientists from different generations and varied areas of knowledge.
Ana Simões (science historian), Catarina Resende Oliveira (neuroscientist), Carlota Simões (mathematics), Elvira Fortunato (microelectronics engineer), Helena Freitas (ecologist), Irene Pimentel (historian), Isabel Trancoso (electronics engineer), Joana Vaz Pais (economist), Mara Freire (chemical engineer) and Maria Fernanda Rollo (historian) are some of the women represented.
Also portrayed are Maria Arménia Carrondo (crystallographer), Maria do Carmo Fonseca (molecular biologist), Maria de Sousa (emeritus immunologist), Maria Mota (biologist), Mónica Bettencourt-Dias (biologist), Perpétua Pinto-do-Ó ( biologist), Raquel Seruca (oncobiologist), Teresa Paiva (doctor), Helena Freitas (ecologist), Teresa Summavielle (neuroscientist) and Teresa Lago (astronomer).
The inauguration of “Women in Science”, which was also attended by the person responsible for the Communication Office of Ciência Viva, Marta Ribeiro da Silva, kicked off the local celebrations of International Women's Day, organized by Setúbal City Council.
