The Smart Tourism Destinations project consists of introducing innovative digital solutions to make tourism sustainable and accessible, leveraging cultural heritage and creativity to improve the global tourist experience.
Setúbal is one of 48 European destinations chosen by the European Commission's Smart Tourism Destinations initiative, which seeks to promote a boost in technological innovation in destinations, particularly in areas such as governance, data management, tourist services and hospitality. In the particular case of Setúbal, the destination will be involved in a learning phase and subsequent implementation of innovative digital solutions, meeting fundamental pillars of tourism such as sustainability, accessibility and digitalization, increasing its offer and quality not only in terms of cultural heritage, but also creative industries for tourism.
Setúbal is a destination that has already proven itself in terms of sustainability and accessibility, standing out with initiatives developed in the management of the municipality's beaches, some of which have won international awards, as well as in the management of accessibility in public and private buildings that have in their Guide to Accessibility to the most visible face. In this sense, it also entered this initiative in the search for new approaches in terms of data management, which will allow gains not only in terms of managing the city's carrying capacity, but also in the development of mechanisms that can allow quick decisions to be made in real time. and effective, for example, in controlling crowds and relocating them to other attractive areas of the destination.
This initiative is also characterized by the involvement of multiple stakeholders, with emphasis on different public entities, the private sector, associations, tourist agents, local producers and academics, perhaps leading to the development of a hub that can promote more intelligent, sustainable and inclusive of the destination and even the region.
Setúbal will announce the first participants in the municipality's Industrial Tourism Route, of which the Michel Giacommeti Labor Museum is already a part.
Along with investment in new technologies, an identity tourism strategy for the municipality is being developed. Birthplace of Bocage and Sebastião da Gama, 2023 has been a year of news regarding Literary Tourism with several initiatives within the scope of this activity.
