Setúbal is once again on the route of the open water swimming world circuit, hosting, on the 28th and 29th of May, the inaugural stage of this year's edition of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series.
The competition's 2022 calendar, announced on March 3 by the International Swimming Federation, consists of four stages to be held throughout the year, a smaller format than usual, which starts in Setúbal.
The stage on the River Sado takes place, as usual, from the Parque Urbano de Albarquel, a riverside space of excellence that provides all the conditions for holding the sporting event.
In addition to the unique natural characteristics of the city, there is also the capacity and organizational quality already demonstrated by the Municipality of Setúbal and by the Portuguese Swimming Federation and internationally recognized.
These arguments lead Setúbal to be, year after year, on the route of this international modality, both in carrying out stages of the world circuit and in Olympic qualifying events, which, in this case, occurred in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
After Setúbal, on the 28th and 29th of May, the competition is in Paris, on the 9th and 10th of July, in a stage that works as a preview for the Olympic Games to be held in 2024 in the French capital.
From the European continent to the American continent, the FINA Marathon Swim World Series 2022 advances to the third stage, from August 26 to 28, which takes place in Lac Mégantic, Canada.
The open water swimming elite completes the world circuit once again in European territory, with the fourth and final stage of the ten kilometer aquatic marathon to be held from December 4th to 7th in Eilat, Israel.
For the president of the International Swimming Federation, Husain Al-Musallam, this year's edition of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series assumes a mix of novelties and increased competitiveness.
“From the start in Setúbal, to the new stage in Paris and until the end of the season in Eilat, we can expect some of the strongest, most competitive and emotional performances we have ever seen in open water swimming”, says the official.
Husain Al-Musallam assures that the competition is stronger than ever. “The quality of open water swimming has never been higher, with champions raising the bar and new talent emerging.”
