Vessels built with reused and recyclable materials are challenged to navigate the Sado River, on the morning of September 17, in the Regatta da Baía do Sado in Banheiras e Insólitos 2023.
The ninth edition of the event organized by the City Council of Setúbal in partnership with Academia Rugby Clube de Setúbal takes place, as usual, in the Urban Park of Albarquel, with registration open from 21 August, with a maximum limit of three dozen ships.
Registration, at a cost of five euros per participating vessel, is done in person at the Campo de Râguebi de Setúbal, in Algodeia, from Monday to Friday from 18:00 pm to 20:30 pm and on Saturdays from 09:00 am to 13:00 pm, or by email academia.rugby.setubal@gmail.com, which serves to obtain information.
The vessels must be built/assembled by the teams, with a maximum of three elements, at the event venue, in boxes to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, with materials of your choice, as long as they are floating, and this capacity can be increased by filling with materials expandable.
The design of the boats, starting at 08:30 am, does not allow for the use of standard manufacturing parts, namely metal, wood, fiber or plastic hulls, normal sails, harnesses, outriggers, paddles or oars, which forces the teams to find materials alternative, and unusual, that cannot be connected by metallic wires.
Vessel crews must, obligatorily, wear a life jacket and wear it throughout the race, which takes place from 11:30 am, on a route in front of the Albarquel Urban Park, published on the event's Facebook page and on the registration act, which may be changed depending on the wind and tides.
At the end of the Regatta da Baía do Sado in Banheiras and Insólitos, all boats must be dismantled by the competing teams, with the materials used in construction being deposited in recycling containers available on site.
Prizes are awarded to the teams with the most unusual and most ecological boats, which float and sail, even if just a little, and to the fastest boats of private teams and the associative movement, as long as they finish the race, with a consolation prize for the last vessel to finish the route.
