Setúbal is a World of Adventure

Venture through sea, land or sky, and discover all the emotions and sensations that Setúbal has to offer with help from our tour operators

Setúbal is the ideal setting for countless adventures, including sporting activities that vary in extremity.

Take advantage of the sports equipment  available, and make the city, the mountain  and the river your own World of Adventure.

Hang-gliding

Take off over the Arrábida Convent, enjoy the views of one of the most beautiful bays in the world and land at the Portinho da Arrábida – an incredible experience. There are several places where you can go hang-gliding along the road that crosses the top of the mountain; however, they do require some skill on the part of the pilots. Because gliders land on beaches, this activity is not allowed during summer.

Coasteering

The Arrábida coast is the perfect place for coasteering thanks to the surroundings of the Natural Park. The rocks that overlook the crystal clear waters of the beaches at the foot of the mountains make the experience even more exciting. This activity requires the use of appropriate safety equipment and must be supervised by experienced professionals .

Climbing

With its limestone rocks, location next to the sea, and south-facing slopes, the Serra da Arrábida provides excellent conditions for climbers. In Setúbal, there are three sites that are specially equipped for this activity: Outão, Fenda and Fojo dos Morcegos. Each of these sites offers routes with varying levels of difficulty, meeting the needs of beginners and those with more experience.

Stand Up Paddle

You can practice this activity in the river and in the sea. You may choose to explore the banks of the Sado Estuary or head towards the Arrábida beaches, on the traditional trip to “Pedra da Anicha”.

Bike Riding

The region of Setúbal is known for its outstanding conditions for cycling, be it mountain biking or road cycling. In a short period of time, you can enjoy the green tracks of the Serra da Arrábida and then cycle alongside the blue waters of the Sado Estuary.

Dolphin watching

A sedentary population of bottlenose dolphins inhabits the Sado Estuary, the only place in mainland Portugal and one of the few places in Europe inhabited by this species.  Duly licensed companies should always be used for Sado dolphin watching, as they ensure compliance with the Code of Conduct that should be adopted for this activity.

Scuba diving

The creation of a protected marine area – the Marinho Luiz Saldanha Park -, has reinforced the natural beauty that the Sado Estuary is known for among diving enthusiasts. Portinho da Arrábida is the perfect place for it, where there are several licensed operators, both for those who have never been diving before and for those who have a lot of experience.

Sailing

Setúbal is a traditional naval and fishing city, surrounded by the sea and river. Naturally, it has all the necessary equipment and facilities for sailing. Sailing trips are one of the region’s attractions, due to it being a popular sport and due to the offer of themed trips, which may include wine or food tastings.

Caving

The Serra da Arrábida has a large diversity of limestone caves, especially close to the sea. Due to the difficulty of accessing most of these caves, it is advisable to use companies that are duly licensed for this activity. “Lapa de Santa Margarida” (with easier access down a flight of stairs), Figueira Brava Cave and Médico Cave are the most famous caves in the region.

Hiking

Do you want to lose track of time? Walk up the Serra da Arrábida, through “Herdade da Mourisca” or along the Sado Estuary, places that provide landscapes of wilder nature, where birds and marine activities are the main attractions. Walks around the city and in Azeitão are also enchanting. Set off on a walk and find out for yourself!

Canoeing

As is the case with stand-up paddle, this activity, practised in the river or sea, lets you explore the Sado Estuary banks or the Arrábida beaches, with a “mandatory” stop at “Pedra da Anicha”, in front of Creiro beach (Portinho da Arrábida).

Birdwatching

The Sado Estuary is an excellent area for birdwatching, receiving populations of up to 50 thousand birds during the winter. The spoonbill, little merganser, heron, western marsh harrier, black-winged stilt and flamingo are a few which stand out among the resident and migratory species. “Herdade da Mourisca” and the Mourisca Tide Mill provide excellent spots for birdwatching. Birdwatching enthusiasts may choose to take part in walking trails or boat trips, organised by duly licensed tour operators.
