The event, organized by the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, in partnership with the City Council, also extends to the polytechnics of Beja and Portalegre, which, together, develop a range of activities under the 2024 theme “Science for a Sustainable Future”.
Workshops, talks and entertainment are part of the suggested activities for Setúbal, starting at 17:30 pm, always at Casa da Baía, which also includes the “Science takes to the streets” space, designed to publicise the various scientific projects currently under development at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal.
Also in this space, open until 22:30 pm, the public can participate in practical activities led by teachers, researchers and partners of that higher education establishment in Setúbal.
Among other suggestions, in “Science takes to the streets” the population has the opportunity to visit Setúbal through virtual reality, discover the microscopic life of the Polytechnic Institute's forest, measure air quality in real time and have a better understanding of how wind and water are alternative energy sources to fossil fuels.
Geodiversity is particularly highlighted throughout the programme to be held in Setúbal, through which the importance of conserving stone heritage will be addressed and the different ways in which the population can contribute to the scientific community in the process of collecting old photos of the region's monuments.
The European Researchers' Night does not forget the fiftieth anniversary of the 25th of April by dedicating a round table to the debate on the evolution of the role of women in science since Democracy was established in the country.
This European Night, now in its third edition, has as its main objectives to generate greater proximity between the scientific community and the population, demonstrate the impact of science on society's daily life and promote interest in science and scientific careers among children and young people.
The full programme of the European Researchers' Night, including for Beja and Portalegre, is available here.
