The Setúbal Hotel and Tourism School (EHTS) traditionally holds the inaugural class of the academic year on World Tourism Day, this year celebrated with the theme “Tourism and Peace”, with students filling the school auditorium to hear the Mayor, the director of EHTS, Helena Lucas, and the gastronome Virgílio Nogueiro Gomes.
Taking into account the theme of World Tourism Day, the Mayor wanted to leave “the importance of peace for tourism” for everyone to reflect on. “Tourism is one of the most promising industries in the world, but without peace there is no tourism”, he said, lamenting that we live in a time when “war is increasing every day”.
André Martins began by recalling the process of installing EHTS, highlighting that it was considered that, as Setúbal is “a tourism region with good gastronomy and wines”, it was necessary to “give more strength to the implementation of tourism” through the creation of a specialized school, and he classified the training provided there as being “excellent”.
He then wished everyone a good school year and that the students “keep Setúbal in their memories”, but asked restaurant and tourism entrepreneurs to “invest so that some young people who trained here can stay” in the city.
The EHTS Director also highlighted the “essential role for peace” played by tourism, inviting everyone to reflect on “the transformative power of tourism for world peace and harmony among peoples”.
Helena Lucas stated that EHTS represents “a new stage” in the lives of the students present at the inaugural class, considering that they will be in the future “the protagonists of the transformation” that the sector will register.
Virgílio Nogueiro Gomes then gave a class on “Stories and curiosities at the table”, in which he addressed the importance of the history of food and the difficulty of researching it.
