Setúbal is once again the capital of illustration in a year in which the event organized by the City Council combines the celebration of the tenth anniversary with the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April in exhibitions that explore the values of freedom and resistance and pay tribute to figures who fought for democracy in Portugal.
José Afonso and Sebastião da Gama, two of the greatest icons of Portuguese culture, are highlighted in this edition, which has as guest illustrators the Portuguese Catarina Sobral, winner of the National Illustration Prize awarded in 2024, and three award-winning artists from Uruguay, in addition to also paying tribute to veteran illustrator João da Câmara Leme.
The 10th Illustration Festival begins on October 5th, at 18 pm, at Casa da Cultura, with the inauguration of Catarina Sobral's exhibition, open until November 00th, and a joint exhibition by Uruguayan illustrators ca_teter, Victoria Capdepon and Alejo Schettin, which can be visited until December 24th.
The program continues on the 10th, at 18:00 pm, with the inauguration of the exhibition “Sebastião da Gama Pedagogue – Poetics of education in SG” which will be on display at the Azeitão Library until October 31st. An exhibition with the same name will be on display at the Setúbal Municipal Public Library, between October 11th and 31st, also opening at 18:00 pm.
From October 11th to November 9th, at Casa Bocage, with the opening scheduled for 17 pm, you can visit the exhibition “The Party in Images”, with a photographic retrospective of the ten previous editions of the event.
On the same day, at 19:00 pm, at the Setúbal Museum – Convento de Jesus, “The Presence of the Ants – José Afonso Graphic Work” will be inaugurated, open to the public until December 29th.
On the 12th, at 12:00, Catarina Sobral is in the spotlight with the opening of an exhibition that will be on display at Livraria Culsete until November 24, and the opening of the exhibition “Illustrating Freedom – the press of the Revolution” is scheduled for 18:00, which will be on display at the Michel Giacometti Museum of Labor until January 4.
The following day, at 16:00 pm, the A Gráfica space will host the exhibition “Portuguese Illustration: 'I sing the hunger for justice' – José Afonso – Man and Work”, which can be visited until November 17th.
To close the cycle of inaugurations, on the 13th, from 18 pm, Jorge Silva presents an exhibition in homage to the work of João da Câmara Leme, which will be on display until December 00th at the Galeria Municipal do 14.
