Major Events

From music to theatre, cinema to visual art, sport or leisure, Setúbal hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Some stand out for the amount of time they’ve been going on for, others for the amount of participants and spectators they attract.

Setúbal Bay

Setúbal Bay International Swim Marathon was created in 2006 as part of the Open Water Swimming World Cup race, and has attracted the best international open water swimmers since its first year.

The organisational success of the first five years resulted in the race being named FINA Setúbal Bay 10 Km World Cup in 2011, and was chosen to be the final qualifying race for the London 2012 Olympic Games, that year earning the title of FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier 2012.

This brilliant event attracts thousands of people year after year, with various editions being played in thrilling final stages and often being accompanied with aerobatics and other exhibitions.

 Bocage Celebrations

The yearly Bocage Celebrations form part of a set of cultural, sport and leisure initiatives, which usually last the entire month.

Blue New Year’s Eve

With the Sado River hosting an unforgettable fireworks display, the fun-filled Blue New Year’s Eve marks the beginning of a new year.

Setúbal is the place to go for the “longest night” of the year, where the hotels, restaurants, bars, street food and concerts attract thousands of people to the riverside in one big celebration for the whole family.

International Dance Day

A programme to celebrate International Dance Day, with activities such as workshops, shows, entertainment and classes open to the general public, held in various public areas and cultural facilities around the municipality.

International Music Day

This musical programme, which celebrates International Music Day (1 October), promotes several projects from local music schools throughout the month. They include performances from guest bands, choral group concerts, shows specifically aimed at young audiences, debates, exhibitions and street entertainment.

Setúbal Music Festival

It may seem like just another music festival, but there is no other event quite like it.

It brings internationally renowned Portuguese and foreign musicians together with local amateur artists, many of them from local schools, social solidarity institutions and immigrant associations.

All programmes include joint performances with guest professional artists and amateur musicians, making music a powerful tool for promoting integration, exchange and multiculturalism.

Setúbal Fashion Weekend

as contribute towards strengthening the city’s entertainment programme, with fashion shows modelling clothes and accessories from local shops.

Setúbal’s Popular Marches

This hugely popular event attracts thousands of people to the city to watch the parades, which usually take place on Luísa Todi Avenue. The following week, people gather to see the paraders march in the contest procession.

Eurovision Live Concert

A concert with performances from artists who participated in past editions of the Eurovision Song Contest.

This event puts Setúbal on the European map of celebrations and initiatives associated with Eurovision. It’s the second biggest Eurovision celebration in Europe and not only attracts locals, but also many national and international tourists.

Nights at the Bay

This event offers a series of musical shows, held in the outside courtyard of one of the municipality’s most beautiful spaces.

Sant’Iago Fair

The Sant’Iago Fair, which is over 400 years old, is the region’s main festival and one of the largest fairs in southern Portugal.

Companies and institutions are present, and traditional artisan crafts are available to buy.

Entertainment is provided by various performers in an exciting show programme.

Sea Week

An event which celebrates the connection the city has with the sea and the river.

It includes activities such as visits and tours on emblematic Navy ships and traditional boats of the Sado River, musical entertainment, gastronomy and fireworks.

STB Dance Allstars

An event which brings one of Portugal’s biggest hip hop dance competitions to Setúbal, with guest crews participating.

Setúbal International Theatre Festival 

This festival presents emerging and multidisciplinary artistic forms.

Every year, the programme includes theatre workshops, music, short films, debates, storytelling, exhibitions and indoor and outdoor shows.

Setúbal Fado Contest

The aim of this contest is to promote the emergence of new Fado values, not only within the municipality, but also across Portugal.

Where: Sociedade Musical Capricho Setubalense

Setúbal Christmas Fest

A Christmas-themed street entertainment programme involving culture, sport and leisure activities.

It includes wonderful Christmas lights and decorations, as well as the STB Christmas Market, where regional gastronomy stands and traditional artisan crafts are on offer.
