Town Hall defines beach season for 2024
The Setúbal City Council approved, in a public meeting, the setting of the bathing season in the municipality in 2024 between June 1st and September 15th.
According to current legislation, determining the duration of the bathing season is the responsibility of local authorities, by informing the Portuguese Environment Agency by the end of the previous year.
Until the publication in 2024 of a new ordinance that establishes the identification of coastal and transitional bathing waters and inland bathing waters, establishing the respective bathing seasons, it is understood that at national level the bathing season runs from May 1st to October 31st
The municipality of Setúbal decided to set this period between June 1st and September 15th, taking into account that the peak period for bathers occurs in the months of June, July and August, a period coinciding with school holidays.
Furthermore, the month of September is usually very attractive for swimming, due to the prolonged good weather conditions and the start of the school term only in the second half of the month.
As the supervision conditions, that is, the presence of lifeguards, are dependent on the availability of young students who traditionally carry out this seasonal task, it is not possible for the bathing season to run much longer than the period coinciding with the school holidays.
